Calling All LOST Fans!! Guest Post by DaddyMac
Posted by ChrissyMacCEO in Uncategorized, tags: Book SneezeAs a recent fan of the television show “Lost” {recent in the fact that we watched the previous 5 seasons in one year} I was immediately struck by the religious overtones. As soon as John Locke walked after the plane crash, I immediately thought about purgatory, heaven, or some spiritual way-station.
It was after we completed the 5th season and was waiting for the 6th and final one to begin, that the CEO received “The Gospel According to Lost” by Chris Seay to review. I was looking forward to reading the book because of religious/spiritual references that I saw during the episodes but was not familiar enough with to put them together and see what the creators of the show were trying to say. Mr. Seay did a very good and concise job of explaining his views of the “Lost” characters and their relation to their biblical or historical counterparts.
Chris Seay is a young, devoted Christian looking for ways to marry faith and the times. He uses those in the pop culture, who are also trying to get an ancient message across in a new way, to help him spread his faith. Mr. Seay uses “real world” situations, like the TV show “Lost”, to help explain the human condition and our search for faith and spirituality. He explained the characters plight in simple and understandable ways without having to “dumb-down” the message.
I believe gone are the days of blind obedience. We want to know why we should be good, why should we “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Mr. Seay explains, through the characters as examples, that the choices we make or don’t make will impact our relationships; what we believe in, what we think we should do, and what the world expects of us. Mr. Seay dissects each character paying close attention to the “good and evil” they have done and how it has shaped the situation they are in and the choices they continue to make. He also makes sure to point out to us how there is not pure good and pure evil, but varying degrees of both in all the characters, and in us. The show is about the path that we are all on, and how we all get lost at different points and times along that path. But Mr. Seay also makes sure to reveal the redeeming qualities in each of the main characters and how it is never too late to change how we deal with the world.
A long time ago, I read the book, “Conversations with God.” I remember that the author asked God how come he does not send any more prophets. God replied that He does constantly in the form of song writers, poets, writers, the person who lives in the “light,” and even TV shows. We just don’t hear the song, or read the words, or believe that we are capable of living that way; so we keep on making the same mistakes and call it evil. ABC’s “Lost” is another example of a writer putting the “Truth” to paper. Do I listen or just walk away and wonder why nothing ever changes?
Will you be tuning in for tonight’s episode of “Lost?” If so, what are your thoughts on this season so far?
